Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a research-based academic support model that offers peer-assisted study sessions for students enrolled in historically rigorous classes. SI sessions are peer-led seminars in which students have the opportunity to discuss course material and develop organizational tools and study skills to prepare for exams. Participation is voluntary, but all students are encouraged to attend SI sessions. Students with varying levels of academic preparedness participate in and benefit from SI.

This program was developed at University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) in 1973 and is used in hundreds of colleges and universities around the world.

SI Motto: "Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand."

Program Goals and Objectives

Goal: To support students develop skills needed to become independent learners.

Objectives:

• To increase the number of students earning a letter grade of C or higher in historically rigorous courses.
• To improve grades across targeted historically rigorous courses.
• To increase student graduation rates at CSUDH
• To increase student retention rates among SI courses.

SI Sessions' Purpose

During SI sessions, students have the opportunity to engage with other students in the same class and the SI Leader to develop effective study skills and learning strategies to gain a better understanding of the course content.

With support of campus partners, we provide professional development trainings and workshops to help students build and expand leadership skills.
